Philip the Tetrarch, year 5

CCCRH has recently acquired a rare coin from the fifth year of Philip the Tetrarch, who reigned between 4 BCE and 34 CE.

Philip was one of the three surviving sons of Herod the Great, and was appointed tetrarch for the NE corner of his deceased father’s kingdom.

He was the only Herodian ruler to put his own image on coins, perhaps reflecting the essentially non-Jewish character of his territory.

This coin is one of only 4 or 5 known examples in the Roman Provincial Coins Online database.

The online gallery of Herodian coins in the CCCRH collection has 37 coins.
